This table shows 50 states and the District of Columbia ranked in descending order of educational attainment as measured by the percentage of their respective populations currently holding a bachelor’s degree. For each state in which recent polling is available, those results are indicated in the column marked “Election 2016.” Senator Bernie Sanders today noted that while the United States once led the world in the percentage of young people graduating from college, we have now slipped to number fifteen in this important category. This situation underlines the need to restore the US competitive position in the world with free college in public institutions for working people and the middle class all across the country, supplemented by debt-free college for other qualified applicants. This is an issue which compels the attention of all Americans who are concerned about the nation’s future.
